It's cool enough to tell twice.
[music: OLP - gravity album]

Most of you have already heard this story, but that's alright. Last monday i went to a lecture about the chemistry of chocolate at King's College. It was held by the CIC (Canadian Institute of Chemistry... or maybe the Chemical Institute of Canada...), and it was fascinating. Being as cool as i am, me and my mom sat with Landry and his chem teacher buddies, as well as Christina, Divya, and Marcella from grade 12. We were like, the rebel table. There were only supposed to be 8 people to a table, but we had at least 10. We ate our chocolate sample before we were supposed to, drank way more coffee than any person should ever have, and laughed at every joke. :)

We got to see the combustion of a smartie too, now that was cool. They put the smartie in a test tube with some potassium chlorate, then used a bunsen burner to heat it up. The smartie melted, obviously, but more importantly, the heat broke down the potassium chlorate (KClO3 i think...) into it's individual components, releasing a whole wack of very hot oxygen. Now, as i'm sure you're aware, combustion is the reaction of something with oxygen. Then think about how much sugar is in a smartie. The thing was like a bloody firework, jumping around in the test tube, a sparkling ball of light. I was mesmerized.

I found out why dogs can't eat chocolate too. There's a chemical in chocolate, the name of which i can't exactly recall, but it takes the human body a really long time to metabolise it. Dogs can't break it down, so it kills them. No oreos for your dogs!

And my favorite part! There's a chemical in chocolate that induces your brain's production of a chemical that encourages feelings of attraction, euphoria, and energy, in other words, it's an aphrodesiac. The neat part is, there's about 10 times more of that chemical in... wait for it...

cheddar cheese.

And there you have it. Definitely worth the five bucks. Well, i'm off to rehearsal!

Ni!

I haven't read 1984, and i'm a little tiny eensy weensy bit worried about pop quizzes but... oh well.
